Know your Glass!

The way we drink anything is very important, especially by way of our nose. Repeat after me, “olfactory is key”. From coffee to wine, some vessels are designed to capture the “perfect” balance of aromas. That being said, choosing a glass depending on the drink you’re about to serve or consume is very important.

Here are a few guidelines to help you choose!

Select smaller wineglasses for white wine and larger glasses for red wine. Generally, more full-bodied wines work best in slightly larger glasses while lighter, fruitier wines can do well in smaller glasses.

Choose fluted or tulip-shaped (champagne) glasses for sparkling wines and champagne. This shape helps keep the bubbles intact for longer and ensure the best flavor and aroma while drinking the sparkling wine.

For wine accompanying dinner, choose wine glasses that are slightly larger so that they can accommodate larger pours, around 4 to 6 oz each, while still having ample empty space in the bowl.

Most Wine glasses have stems, which can vary in length, but now stem less glasses and becoming increasingly popular.

If you are not a wine drinker, like me, there are three other glasses you should be aware about. And no, I’m not talking about martini or margarita glasses. If you don’t know about them, go back to school!

Whiskey tumblers have a broad base and ensure a firm grip. They are the most crucial part of my parties.

Cocktail glasses, or Tom Collins Glass is a deep tumbler, that has a capacity of 250-300ml. This makes it easy for you to serve a good amount of your favorite punch, Mojito or LIIT.

The third type of glass is Tapri, which is technically a tea glass. I intend to serve shots in these quirky little babies and look at the reaction of my guests!
